The Story of Compass

Compass stands at West 1st Avenue and Manitoba Street, in the middle of Olympic Village. It was completed in 2010 by Millennium Development Group as part of the Village on False Creek master plan, the neighbourhood that served as the Athletes’ Village for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

GBL Architects designed Compass, as they did The Brook, further along the same block, and Sails. It is a boutique eight-storey building with 63 homes on floors three to eight, above ground-floor businesses including TD Bank and InsureBC, all under one strata corporation, strata plan BCS3830. On the roof, residents share a private garden and lounge.

Homes were finished to the Village’s high standard, with ceilings of 9½ to 10 feet, Eggersmann cabinetry from Germany, Miele appliances with a gas cooktop, engineered hardwood floors and double-sink bathrooms.

Like the rest of the Village, Compass is LEED Platinum certified. Heat and hot water come from the Neighbourhood Energy Utility, and a radiant capillary mat system, the same one used across the Village, heats and cools homes quietly year-round.

Living at Compass

Compass is about as central as it gets in Olympic Village. The plaza, Urban Fare, London Drugs and the Village’s cafés, restaurants and breweries are steps away, and the seawall, Hinge Park and Habitat Island are a short walk north.

Olympic Village Station on the Canada Line is about a five-minute walk, putting downtown one stop away and YVR about twenty-five minutes south. The seawall connects to Science World, Yaletown and Granville Island, and False Creek ferries stop at docks nearby.

Who lives at Compass? Professionals, first-time buyers and downsizers who want a smaller building with the whole Village at the door, and investors, since rentals are allowed.

With only 63 homes, Compass doesn’t see many listings, so it pays to watch for new ones. They show up here automatically.
