The Story of the Village on False Creek

The Village on False Creek is the master-planned development that became Olympic Village. Built in 2009 and 2010 as the Athletes' Village for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, it housed roughly 2,800 athletes and officials before being converted to private residential use shortly after the closing ceremonies.

The project was led by Millennium Development under a development agreement with the City of Vancouver. The ambition was significant: create a new sustainable waterfront neighbourhood from a former industrial site, set the LEED Platinum benchmark for a full community, and deliver housing at multiple price points.

Architecturally, the Village on False Creek isn't a single building — it's a collection of individually designed mid-rise buildings by multiple Vancouver firms, all working within a shared design framework. That's why you'll see variation in façade treatment, balcony style, and massing as you walk from building to building. Buildings include The Brook, The Bridge, Kayak, Shoreline, Canada House, and Sails — each with its own civic address within the master plan footprint.

The site sits at the southeast corner of False Creek, directly on the seawall. The original vision included a waterfront plaza anchored by JJ Bean and Urban Fare, a community centre at Creekside, and public art integrated throughout. Today the Village on False Creek functions exactly as it was drawn: a walkable, waterfront, transit-connected residential community that has matured into one of Vancouver's most desirable neighbourhoods.

Floor Plans & Unit Types

The Village on False Creek offers one of the widest ranges of unit types in any Olympic Village building grouping — because it effectively is the neighbourhood. Here's what you'll find across the master plan.

Studios and Junior One-Bedrooms. The smallest units run roughly 475–575 sq. ft. and appear mostly in the lower-floor interior positions. These are the most affordable entry point into the neighbourhood.

Standard One-Bedrooms. The bread-and-butter floor plan. Typically 575–850 sq. ft., with variations for den configurations, kitchen layouts, and balcony size.

Two-Bedrooms. Sizes run from efficient two-beds in the 850–1,000 sq. ft. range up to family-oriented layouts of 1,300–1,700 sq. ft.. The better plans have true bedroom separation.

Townhouses. Ground-floor and podium-level townhouse units with private entries off Athletes Way or the interior courtyard. These are rare in the resale market.

Penthouses and Sub-Penthouses. Top-floor units, many with private rooftop terraces, dramatic False Creek views, and premium finishing. Canada House penthouses and Sails top floors are the most sought-after.

Amenities & Shared Spaces

Every building in the Village on False Creek has access to the Gold Medal Club, the Village’s shared amenity hub with an indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room and gym. What varies is the in-building package: most buildings have a front-desk concierge, while Compass and Sails do not.

Typical amenities you'll find across the master plan:

  • Fitness facilities (building-dependent)
  • Pool and hot tub at the Gold Medal Club, open to every building
  • Concierge in most buildings (not Compass or Sails)
  • Outdoor courtyards
  • Bike storage
  • EV charging in certain buildings

Neighbourhood amenities are where this master plan really shines — Hinge Park, Habitat Island, the seawall, and the Creekside Community Centre are all within a five-minute walk from any unit.

Living in the Village on False Creek

Day-to-day life in the Village on False Creek is defined by what's right outside your door. The seawall is fifty steps from most buildings. The plaza — where JJ Bean pulls most of the neighbourhood's morning espresso — is at the heart of the development. Urban Fare is the grocery anchor, Terra Breads handles the bakery run.

The food scene is close. Craft Beer Market's patio overlooks the water. Tap & Barrel's deck fills up on sunny weekends. Ancora delivers the special-occasion waterfront dinner.

Transit is effortless. Canada Line at Olympic Village Station is a four-minute walk and puts downtown one stop away. The Aquabus to Granville Island is a five-minute floating commute.

Who lives here? The Village on False Creek has one of the most demographically mixed resident profiles in Vancouver: young professionals in the one-bedroom layouts, downsizers from West Side houses in the larger two-beds, families with young kids in the townhouses, and a long-standing community of owner-occupiers. That mix is part of what makes the neighbourhood feel like a neighbourhood.
