The Story of The Bridge

The Bridge sits at 1616 Columbia Street on the western edge of Olympic Village, right at the foot of Cambie Bridge. The building was completed in 2010 as part of the Village on False Creek master plan, developed by Millennium Group alongside the broader Olympic Athletes’ Village conversion.

The Bridge is an 11-storey, 118-unit concrete mid-rise, modest in scale by downtown standards but confident in its presence. Designed by Merrick Architecture, the firm behind Shoreline and Kayak, it uses clean lines and expansive glazing to frame the water and Hinge Park next door. Alongside the tower, the lower-rise homes on Athletes Way are some of the most private in the Village: at 150 and 170 Athletes Way there is only one home per floor, with a private elevator opening straight into the suite, and 160 Athletes Way has two per floor.

The Bridge earned LEED Platinum certification as part of the master plan’s sustainability framework. That certification shows up in the building’s day-to-day systems. The Neighbourhood Energy Utility — Olympic Village’s centralized heat and hot water plant — supplies the entire building, eliminating the need for individual boilers and reducing operating costs. Radiant capillary heating and cooling delivers quiet, even climate control throughout every unit. Automated exterior blinds and deep balconies limit solar gain in summer. Motion sensors and zoned lighting manage energy use in common areas.

Residents also get full access to the Gold Medal Club, the 6,500-square-foot shared amenity hub with indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, and fitness centre. Combined with the building’s concierge service, it’s the same premium amenity package that makes The Brook one of the most sought-after buildings in Olympic Village — but with The Bridge’s smaller footprint, many buyers prefer it.

Floor Plans & Unit Types at The Bridge

The Bridge is compact on purpose. Eleven storeys at 1616 Columbia Street, plus lower-rise homes and townhomes along Athletes Way and street-level homes on Columbia Street and Walter Hardwick Avenue, give it a tighter resident community and a more intimate feel than larger towers. Most homes are one- and two-bedrooms, with a few studios, a set of larger three-bedroom homes, two-level townhomes and two penthouses.

One-Bedrooms. The most common floor plan in the building. Sizes run from about 505 to 845 sqft. Features that show up consistently: 9-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, large balconies, chef’s kitchens with gourmet gas cooking, and the radiant heating-cooling system. One-bedroom units on the Columbia Street side tend to be quieter; units on the Hinge Park / garden side often come with peek-a-boo False Creek views.

Two-Bedrooms and 2BR + Den. Most are 950 to 1,450 sqft. The largest two-bedroom homes, along Athletes Way and on the 10th floor, run from about 1,650 to 2,650 sqft. Plans with a den and true bedroom separation are the family-friendly option in the building and move quickly when listed. Many have covered terraces of 200 to 300 sqft.

Three-Bedrooms. Three-bedroom homes run about 1,250 to 1,430 sqft in the tower, around 1,650 sqft at 160 Athletes Way, and 2,200 to 2,400 sqft at 150 Athletes Way, where the larger plans sit.

Penthouses. The tower’s penthouse takes the entire 11th floor: three bedrooms and 3,574 sqft, with about 4,780 sqft of private terraces and views across False Creek to the city, the mountains, Science World and BC Place. The 10th floor below it includes a two-bedroom sub-penthouse of about 2,650 sqft with nearly 800 sqft of outdoor space. At 170 Athletes Way, a two-bedroom-and-office penthouse of about 1,975 sqft has a private rooftop terrace of about 1,000 sqft. Homes at this level rarely come to market.

Townhomes. Two-level townhomes on Athletes Way, about 1,500 to 1,650 sqft with two bedrooms, a flex room and 2½ bathrooms, have wrap-around patios and balconies, and one backs onto Hinge Park. Along Columbia Street and Walter Hardwick Avenue, street-level studios and one-bedrooms have their own patio entrances.

Studios. Studios run about 475 to 525 sqft. There are only a few, making them the rare entry-level option in an otherwise mid-to-upper-tier building.

Living at The Bridge

The Bridge sits at the western edge of Olympic Village — the first building you see coming off Cambie Bridge, with Hinge Park directly adjacent and the seawall steps from the front door. For residents who want to feel more at the edge of the neighbourhood than in the middle of it, this location is the draw. The plaza with JJ Bean, Urban Fare, and the buzz of weekend patio life is a two-minute walk away when you want it, and a reasonable distance when you’d rather have the quiet. A children’s playground sits across the street, and the off-leash dog park in Hinge Park is close by.

Morning routines play out along the water. The seawall connects east to Science World in about eight minutes on foot, or west to Granville Island in twenty. The Aquabus dock is at your doorstep. Canada Line is a six-minute walk across the neighbourhood, putting downtown one stop away.

Food and errands are covered. Urban Fare handles the weekly shop. Terra Breads is the morning bakery stop. Earnest Ice Cream, Tap & Barrel, Craft Beer Market, and the Flying Pig all sit within a four-block radius. JJ Bean is the default coffee.

Who lives at The Bridge? The resident mix skews toward buyers who want a smaller, more intimate building: owners drawn to the 118-unit scale and the Hinge Park setting. You’ll find fewer investors and more long-term owner-occupiers than in larger buildings.

The Bridge: Quick Answers

Who built The Bridge?

Millennium Development Group built The Bridge in 2010, to a design by Merrick Architecture, as part of the Village on False Creek master plan, ahead of the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Do Bridge residents have Gold Medal Club access?

Yes — The Bridge is one of the Olympic Village buildings with full Gold Medal Club access included, covering the indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, and fitness centre in the 6,500-square-foot shared amenity hub.

How does the radiant capillary heating and cooling work?

The Bridge uses a radiant capillary system in the ceilings — heat is distributed through water flowing through fine tubing embedded in the ceiling. It’s quiet, even throughout the room, and doesn’t dry out the air like forced-air systems. Cooling works the same way in reverse.

What’s the Neighbourhood Energy Utility (NEU)?

It’s a centralized heat and hot water plant serving the entire Olympic Village neighbourhood. Individual buildings don’t have their own boilers — heat and hot water are supplied from a central facility that also recovers waste heat from the nearby sewage system. It’s part of what made Olympic Village a LEED Platinum neighbourhood target.

Buying or Selling at The Bridge?

Because The Bridge turns over so infrequently, building-specific knowledge matters more here than in larger, more active buildings. We know which floor plans command the premium, how recent penthouse sales are affecting the building’s baseline pricing, and what the strata’s current priorities are. Whether you’re buying in or selling out, that context is what gets the right outcome.
